What are the Toxic Ten?

The "Toxic Ten" are ten types of negative thought patterns or behaviours that can trap individuals in a cycle of self-sabotage. They are often subconscious beliefs or habits that we’ve either inherited or developed over time. Joseph McClendon III emphasises that once we become aware of these toxic patterns, we can begin to rewire our thinking, change our behaviours, and ultimately transform our lives.

1. Procrastination

Procrastination is another form of self-sabotage that stems from fear, doubt, or lack of clarity. When you put things off, it often leads to anxiety and stress, creating a vicious cycle that’s difficult to break.

2.
Hesitation

Hesitation is a form of indecision that often holds you back from taking action. While it might feel like you’re being cautious or thoughtful, hesitation often stems from fear, doubt, or a lack of confidence. It keeps you stuck in a state of inaction, which, over time, can become a major obstacle to your success.

3. Fear of Failure

Fear of failure is one of the most powerful roadblocks to personal success. It often leads to procrastination or avoidance of risks altogether, preventing you from taking action and achieving success.

4. Fear of Success

While it may sound counterintuitive, fear of success is a real psychological phenomenon. People may unconsciously fear the changes that success might bring—like increased responsibility, expectations, or even feelings of unworthiness.

5. Self Doubt

Self-doubt is one of the most insidious forms of mental sabotage. This feeling can cause you to question your abilities, decisions, and even your worth. The more you second guess, the more you limit yourself - making it one of the biggest barriers to personal growth and success.

6. Self Loathing

Self-loathing is a toxic emotion that goes beyond self-doubt—it’s a deep, internalised belief that you're not worthy of success, happiness, or love. It's when you not only question your abilities but also feel a sense of shame toward who you are as a person.

7. Impostor Syndrome

Impostor Syndrome is a pervasive feeling that, despite external success, you don't actually deserve your accomplishments. It's the belief that you're a "fraud" and that, sooner or later, others will discover you’re not as capable, smart, or talented as they think you are.

8. Stress

Stress is one of the most common and debilitating emotional challenges people face, and it can manifest in many forms—whether it’s stress about work, relationships, health, or the future. When you’re stressed, your body goes into "fight or flight" mode, and the mental and physical toll can quickly accumulate.

9. Overwhelm

Overwhelm is a common emotional experience where you feel like there is too much happening at once, and you just can’t keep up. It's that sense of being buried under an avalanche of tasks, decisions, and responsibilities, where the pressure feels unrelenting and the situation is hopeless.

10. Fear of Rejection

The fear of rejection is one of the most common and powerful fears that holds people back from pursuing their goals, building relationships, and reaching their full potential. As humans, this fear of rejection often stems from a deep-seated desire for acceptance and belonging. However when we avoid rejection, we also avoid the opportunities that come with putting ourselves out there—whether it’s personal growth, new connections, or success.
